Manus vs Claude: Which AI Agent Should Your Business Use? (2026)

Manus is a hosted agent that runs errands. Claude is a model family behind Chat, Cowork, Code, and Managed Agents. Where each wins, and what we tell clients.

The Question Behind the Question

The comparison shows up in our discovery calls in a specific shape. Someone on the team signed up for Manus because a demo video showed it building a website from one prompt. Someone else has been living in Claude for a year. Leadership wants a single answer before they pay for either one company-wide.

We have a stake in this. OneWave is a Claude Partner Network member and we have built our consulting practice on Claude since 2024. We also tested Manus the week it launched in March 2025 and have kept a paid seat since. So we will say the bias out loud and then show our work.

Manus and Claude are not two answers to the same question. One is a product that runs errands. The other is a model family with five different ways to put it to work.

What Manus Actually Is

Manus is a hosted, autonomous general agent. You describe an outcome, it writes a plan, opens a cloud browser and a sandbox, and works until it hands you a deliverable: a research report, a slide deck, a spreadsheet, a deployed web app. It is built by Butterfly Effect Pte. Ltd., a company founded in China that moved its headquarters to Singapore in mid-2025.

The 2026 product is Manus 1.6, sold in Lite, standard, and Max tiers, with a faster Chat Mode alongside the original Agent Mode. Its signature feature is Wide Research, which fans a task out to as many as 100 parallel sub-agents. At launch Manus disclosed that it ran on Claude Sonnet plus fine-tuned Qwen models. It now brands its own model tiers and does not publish what sits beneath them.

Ownership is the unusual part. Meta agreed to acquire Manus for more than $2 billion in December 2025. In April 2026, China's National Development and Reform Commission ordered the deal unwound under its foreign-investment security review rules, the first AI acquisition blocked that way. As we write this, the separation is still in progress.

What Claude Actually Is

Claude is Anthropic's model family and the products built on it. As of August 2026 the lineup is Claude Fable 5 at the top, released June 9, Claude Opus 5 released July 24, Claude Sonnet 5 released June 30, and Claude Haiku 4.5 for high-volume work. Fable 5 is the same underlying model as the restricted-access Claude Mythos 5, with safeguards applied.

The products are where the comparison gets real. Claude Chat is the assistant. Claude Cowork is the desktop agent that works inside your files and connected apps, generally available on every paid plan since April 9. Claude Code is the terminal agent for engineers. Claude Managed Agents, in public beta since April 8, is Anthropic hosting long-running agents for you at $0.08 per active session-hour plus tokens. Underneath all of it sits the API. We wrote a complete guide to Chat, Cowork, and Code if you want the long version.

So when a prospect asks "Manus or Claude," the honest reframe is "Manus, or which Claude surface?" Cowork is the one that competes head-on.

Where Manus Wins

Zero-setup delegation. Manus is the fastest path from a sentence to a finished artifact we have used. No connectors to authorize, no skills to install, no permission prompts. For a founder who wants a competitive landscape report by lunch and does not care how, it is very good.

Parallel breadth. Wide Research is a real capability. Comparing 80 vendors, enriching a long prospect list, or scraping a category of public pages is where its fan-out model does something Cowork does not do natively.

Deliverable formats. Slides, deployed sites, and mobile apps come out the other end already packaged. Claude can produce all of these, but you assemble the pipeline. Manus ships it as a button.

Where Claude Wins

Reliability on work that matters. In our July 2026 platform comparison we said Manus is the right tool when you can tolerate a 60 to 70 percent first-pass hit rate and review the rest. Claude is the tool when the output goes to a client, a regulator, or production. That has not changed with Manus 1.6.

It works where your data already lives. Cowork operates on the files on your machine and the systems you connect through MCP. Claude Code operates on your actual repository. Managed Agents can run inside your own perimeter with self-hosted sandboxes. Manus works in its cloud and you upload to it.

Compounding customization. Skills, subagents, hooks, and MCP servers turn Claude into a platform your team shapes over time. We have published 204 open-source Claude skills, and our clients run them on day one of an engagement. Manus has no equivalent layer; every task starts from the same blank prompt.

Model choice. Sonnet 5 at $2 per million input tokens, Opus 5 at $5, Fable 5 at $10. You pick the intelligence and the price per task. Manus meters everything in opaque credits.

What Each Costs

Manus prices by credits. The published tiers are Free with 300 daily credits and one concurrent task, Pro from $20 per month for 4,000 credits and 20 concurrent tasks, a $40 tier for 8,000 credits, and Team from $20 per seat. Unused credits do not roll over. A long Wide Research run can consume a meaningful share of a month's allowance, and you do not know the cost until it finishes.

Claude prices by seat, with usage tiers. Pro is $20 per month and includes Cowork and Claude Code. Max starts at $100 for 5x or 20x usage. Team is $25 per seat monthly, or $20 annual, with SSO and central admin. Enterprise is custom. The API is pay-per-token at the rates above. For a 10-person team, Manus Pro and Claude Team land within a few dollars of each other on paper. The difference is what you get for it.

Data and Security Posture

Manus publishes a security page with SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001:2022 attestations, which is more than most agent startups can say. Its privacy policy is governed by Singapore law, and opting your data out of training is listed as a Team plan feature, not a default. Then there is the ownership question. A vendor whose parent company is being forced to divest it by a foreign regulator is a vendor whose sub-processors, data jurisdiction, and continuity you must re-verify before you sign.

Anthropic holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, and ISO 42001:2023, and offers a HIPAA-ready configuration with a Business Associate Agreement. Commercial inputs and outputs are not used for training by default, zero-data-retention is available on the API, and Enterprise plans get custom retention. Every regulated client we have onboarded cleared Claude through security review. None has yet asked us to clear Manus.

The Decision Table

If your situation isUseWhy
One-off research or a prototype deliverable, nobody reviews the processManusFastest sentence-to-artifact path, no setup

What We Tell Clients

Standardize on Claude. Put Cowork on every knowledge worker's machine, put Claude Code in front of every engineer, and route production automation through the API or Managed Agents. Then keep one or two Manus seats on a Pro plan for the people who run breadth-heavy research, and treat its output as a draft.

The reason is not benchmark scores. It is that a general agent you cannot customize, running in someone else's cloud, on credits you cannot forecast, is a tool. A model family your team can shape, permission, and audit is infrastructure. Companies buy infrastructure once and build on it for years. That is what we help teams do, and it is why we made the same bet on Claude in 2024 that we would make today.

Update, September 2026: On August 11 Manus announced it was returning to independent operation and would delete data generated by certain users since December 29, 2025 over August 23 and 24 to satisfy regulators. That is exactly the continuity risk described above. Separately, of the 21 inbound discovery calls we took in August, five said an AI assistant had recommended OneWave, across ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok. Answer engines are now making this comparison on your behalf, so publish what you actually think.
