Claude Docs, Slides, Design, Dashboards and Motion: What Each One Is For

Claude now makes the deck, the doc, the dashboard and the explainer video, and two of the five are still in beta. What each is for, which plan gets it, and why our own live dashboard was stamped today and still months out of date.

The Short Answer

Claude now makes five kinds of work product inside an ordinary conversation: documents (Claude Docs), presentations (Claude Slides), visual designs (Claude Design), live dashboards (Claude Dashboards) and short animated explainers (Claude Motion). On October 8, 2026, Anthropic took Docs, Slides and Design out of beta and put them on every plan, including Free. Dashboards and Motion went into beta the same day, on paid plans and on Team and Enterprise respectively.

  • Docs, Slides and Design are ready for real work today. Decks download as PowerPoint or PDF, and Anthropic told VentureBeat that docs export to Word or Google Docs.
  • Dashboards is worth a pilot if your numbers already live in Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift, ClickHouse or Salesforce. Without a data connector it is a chart maker.
  • Motion is the sleeper. It writes animation as code, with no video model, which is the same approach we have used to make our own videos for months.
  • One deadline: the standalone Claude Design site closes December 14, 2026, and chats and comments there are deleted when it does.

How We Got Here in Three Weeks

On September 16, Anthropic merged Cowork into regular Claude chat and launched Docs and Slides in beta. Its stated reason was that people used both Cowork and Design and found it frustrating to decide where a task belonged. There is no mode to pick any more: you ask for a deck, and Claude decides whether the job needs a longer-running agent behind it.

Twenty-two days later the three builders left beta. According to Anthropic, people made more than 45 million docs, decks and designs in Claude during that window. That is Anthropic's number, not an audited one, but the speed of the graduation tells you where the company thinks Claude's daily use is heading: from answering questions to producing the file you were going to make anyway.

If your team learned Claude from our older guide to Chat, Cowork and Code, the Cowork half of it now lives inside chat. Claude Code is unchanged and still separate.

Which Builder for Which Job

Most of the confusion we hear on client calls is not about what these tools do. It is about which one a given plan includes. Pick the job and the plan below.

Docs and Slides: the first draft moves into Claude

Docs and Slides replace a step, not a tool. Your team still finishes a board deck in PowerPoint or Google Slides, but the version that arrives there is already structured and written. Anthropic says PowerPoint and PDF downloads look like what you made in the editor, and decks can also go to Google Slides as editable files. The weak point is the same one we flag in every training cohort: a deck is only as good as the argument you give it. Write the outline yourself, then let Claude build.

Design: migrate before December 14

Design now works inside any conversation, and the standalone site at claude.ai/design is going away. Per Anthropic's migration article, one click from the Artifacts page moves every design system in the organization. Three things do not come across:

  • Chats with Claude and comments on projects. Both are deleted when the old site closes.
  • Empty design systems, and any built from a starter theme, even if you edited them.
  • Public project links, which stop working. Download each project as a .zip first.

Organizations with zero data retention cannot turn on artifacts at all, so they cannot migrate. If that is you, export your projects now.

Dashboards: live data, not a live question

Claude@claudeai·Oct 8, 2026
Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion are in beta today. Ask Claude to turn your data into live dashboards and your ideas into animated explainers.

Dashboards connects to a data platform, keeps the charts current as the data changes, shows when each chart last refreshed, and lets you click any number to see the query behind it. That last feature is the one that matters. A chart nobody can audit is a chart nobody trusts in a leadership meeting.

We learned the limit of "live" the hard way, and it is the reason this section exists.

What We Saw: A Dashboard That Was Live and Still Wrong

Since July we have run an LLM price board as a published Claude artifact. A scheduled job rebuilds it every morning at 6:15 from OpenRouter's public model catalog and republishes it to the same link. We built it that way because the artifact could not fetch data on its own, so a scheduled republish was the only way to keep it current.

Our price board on October 16, 2026. The prices were refreshed that morning. The model list was not.

This morning's build is stamped October 16 and every price on it is current. It still lists Claude Haiku 4.5 and the GPT-5.6 family. Anthropic shipped Haiku 5.5 on October 7, and OpenAI's October 7 system card says GPT-6 Sol and Luna replace GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna in ChatGPT. The data was live. The definition, a list of models we picked by hand in July, was almost three months old, and nothing on the page said so.

A live dashboard keeps the numbers current. It does not keep the question current. Someone has to own that.

That is the rule we now give any team piloting Claude Dashboards: every dashboard gets a named owner and a review date for what it measures, not just a refresh schedule for the data. The connector solves the plumbing we had to build by hand. It does not solve the ownership.

Motion Is How We Already Make Video

Claude@claudeai·Oct 8, 2026
Claude Motion turns reports, charts, or product walkthroughs into short animations. Claude writes each one as code, with no video model involved, so you can change any word, number, or timing, then export an MP4. In beta on Team and Enterprise plans.
View on X

"No video model involved" is the line most coverage skipped, and it is the whole point. There is no generated footage and no AI-generated people. Motion writes code that animates text, charts, shapes and images, then renders it. We have made our own videos this way for months with HyperFrames and Claude Code. The 44-second explainer below is one HTML file, rendered from a single command.

Our own code-rendered explainer, made with HyperFrames and Claude Code. Claude Motion brings the same approach inside Claude.

What code-as-video buys a business is not polish. It is that a number can change. When a figure in one of our videos goes stale, we edit one line and re-render, instead of booking a motion designer. For quarterly results, product walkthroughs and internal training, that is the difference between a video you make once and a video you keep current. Motion is the first version of this a non-technical team can use without a terminal.

What to Do This Week

  • Enterprise admins: Anthropic set Docs, Slides and Design to turn on by default on October 15. Check Organization settings to confirm that matches your policy, then decide whether to enable Dashboards and Motion, which stay off until you do.
  • Anyone on standalone Claude Design: migrate design systems and download projects before December 14.
  • Team leads: pick one recurring deck and one recurring report, and run each through Claude for a month. Measure edits needed, not first-draft speed.
  • Data owners: before anyone connects a warehouse to Dashboards, write down who owns each metric definition.

Do You Need a Partner?

Not to try any of these. Docs, Slides and Design are on the Free plan. A partner earns the fee when the output goes in front of a board or a client: setting the admin defaults, connecting Dashboards to data people already argue about, and teaching a team to write the outline before asking for the deck. That is the work in our Claude consulting engagements and our Claude Enterprise rollouts, and the price board above is a fair picture of what goes wrong when nobody owns the definition.
